In an ideal world all artists would have a personal business manager who would plan and manage their career, find representation with top national and international galleries, build their client base, establish contacts with important collectors, seek out funding opportunities, maintain and update their website, follow up all new contacts…..the list goes on.
The reality unfortunately is that as artists we need to be able to do all these things, and more, ourselves! The good news however is that everyone can do these things if they start seeing themselves as business entrepreneurs, as well as artists. The starting point is recognising that nowadays being an artist requires you to treat your art practice as a small business. All good businesses are about developing a unique, winning product and creating opportunities to market and sell it. Art is no different.
Once we step outside and close the door of the studio we enter another world – the art business world. In order to succeed in this world we need to understand how it operates.
But this is not the way artists are expected to think, is it?
Building a Business From Your Art - delivered as either a 1 or 2 day interactive workshop - shows how it is possible to develop a viable business as an artist, by taking control of your own career, creating your own opportunities.
Over the course of this workshop we will look at the Irish Art market and how it has evolved over the past 20 years, and how in turn the market place has changed, making it possible to develop a career as an artist in a way that would just not have been possible 20 years ago. Building a Business From Your Art aims to fill the gap between the professional development training provided by the local Arts offices and the functional training provided by the enterprise boards and specifically targets visual artists that are looking for guidance, direction and advice in developing a sustainable and viable business as an artist. What sets this workshop apart from any others is that it is delivered by an Artist for other Artists, drawing on his own experience in developing a successful and viable career as a full time painter.
